What decides the design
- The building is usually occupied while the work happens, so changeovers are phased, and anything that needs a long shutdown has to be planned into the project.
- Occupancy varies by area and by hour: a sales floor, a back office and a kitchen or service area carry different internal loads and very different ventilation requirements.
- Roof structure, curb dimensions and the available electrical service usually decide between a packaged rooftop unit and a split system before capacity is discussed.
- Make-up air has to be balanced against kitchen and washroom exhaust; without it the building runs under negative pressure and doors, dampers and flues behave unpredictably.

Selection points
- 01
Confirm the electrical service before selecting a size: rooftop units in the range are 220V/60Hz/1Ph, with 3-phase available at 5 ton; a larger unit changes the service and the feed.

Where ventilation air is required, state the outdoor-air quantity and whether it is to be conditioned: the rooftop platform supports DOAS and make-up air customisation, higher MERV filtration and higher static pressure options.
- 03
Ask for the economizer and energy-recovery options at selection stage: they change the cabinet and curb layout, so adding them later is a cabinet change, not a field addition.

If the building is to be controlled by a BMS, name the protocol at quotation: BACnet and Modbus options are available on the rooftop range and must be ordered with the unit.

Balance exhaust against make-up air with the damper sizes that fit the duct. Round dampers are available in 4", 5", 6", 8" and 10", each with a flow-control adjustment screw and a visible open/closed status rod.

Where rooms need independent control but the ceiling void is limited, concealed ducted or low-profile floor-ceiling indoor units can be served from the same outdoor platform.
