Education
Classroom ventilation with heating and cooling for schools, campuses and portables, where occupancy density and summer use both drive the equipment selection.
What decides the design
- Ventilation is the dominant load: classrooms are densely occupied, so the outdoor-air requirement per room often exceeds what the heating and cooling load alone would suggest.
- The building alternates between long unoccupied periods and heavy use, and retrofit work is confined to a short summer window — equipment has to hold setback, recover the space in the morning and be changeable within the break.
- Summer programmes and year-round community use mean cooling is now specified in buildings designed for heating and ventilation only, which changes the electrical service.
- Gymnasiums, cafeterias, shops and portables each carry a different load profile and occupancy pattern, and one central system rarely serves all of them with a single control strategy.
Recommended system combination
These families are selected together, not individually — the match between them is what makes the system work.
Rooftop Package Units
commercial equipment
Classroom, gym and cafeteria conditioning in one cabinet, 3–30 ton, with integrated outdoor-air treatment and energy recovery, electric heat or heat pump heating options.
Rooftop package units from 3 to 30 ton, with deep customisation up to 50–100 ton including DOAS and make-up air.
Concealed Ducted Units
air conditioning
Concealed ceiling units for classrooms, offices and retrofit zones that have no rooftop curb or plant space.
Concealed ducted indoor units for ceiling-void installation.
ERV / HRV — AspireVent Series
ventilation
Room or cluster-level recovery ventilation at 100 or 150 CFM for portables, small rooms and phased retrofit areas.
Heat and energy recovery ventilators, 100 / 150 CFM, side or top port, with ECM motors and a washable recovery core.
Motorized Dampers — MUD Series
ventilation
Make-up air and exhaust balancing for washrooms, shops and science rooms, in 4" to 10" round sizes.
Round motorized dampers for balancing fresh air against exhaust, with a silent 24 VAC hysteresis motor and spring return to closed.
Diffusers & Grilles
ventilation
Air distribution for classrooms and halls — jet, slot and swirl diffusers for high ceilings, round or square ceiling diffusers for suspended ceilings, and return grilles.
Ceiling and wall air distribution — jet, slot, swirl and round or square ceiling diffusers, grilles and air disc valves.
Selection points
- 01
Establish the outdoor-air requirement per classroom and per portable first: it sets the unit airflow and often the unit size, particularly where one packaged unit delivers ventilation air and space conditioning together.
- 02
Confirm whether the economizer and energy-recovery packages are required, and order them with the unit: both are factory options on the rooftop platform and change the cabinet arrangement.
- 03
For retrofit zones without a rooftop curb, concealed ducted or low-profile floor-ceiling indoor units paired with a side-discharge outdoor unit avoid structural work and roof penetrations.
- 04
Specify setback and start-of-day recovery with the control package. The AFT533D supports a 7-day schedule, circulate mode and preheat or precool to reach the scheduled temperature on time.
- 05
Match the diffuser to the ceiling and the throw: jet, slot and swirl diffusers suit high or exposed ceilings, round and square ceiling diffusers suit suspended ceilings, and grilles handle walls and returns.
- 06
Confirm damper sizes against the exhaust quantities for washrooms, shops and science rooms — round dampers are available in 4", 5", 6", 8" and 10", each with flow-control adjustment.
